The Red Cross says seven households and 18 residents displaced by the Friday afternoon fire at a Smithtown apartment building are registered for emergency assistance.

Crews were back at the Avalon Circle Complex on Saturday boarding up windows and cleaning up the damage.

The fire tore through the complex after 2:45 p.m. Fire officials said the flames had destroyed the first and second floor by the time they arrived.

Resident Jill Stranbord said the timing couldn't be any more tragic.

"I mean, I talked to people who ran out with bare feet... it was just horrible," she said.
