A state agency released a report on Roslyn Union Free School District's progress Wednesday two years after an embezzling scandal shocked the community.
District officials stole more than $11.2 million from the schools in 2004. Superintendent Gerard Dempsey says he's been working hard to clean up the corruption and restore parents' trust. Although several failures are listed in the audit, which evaluated records and practices from September 2005 to January 2006, Dempsey claims most of the problems have since been corrected. One of the items listed as shortcomings is employee access to the treasurer's computer-generated signature.
Many parents say they still do not trust the school district and are reluctant to approve large budgets. According to other parents, though, that attitude only hurts the children as important programs have been cut.
