Flooding remained a threat on shoreline communities throughout the day Thursday, with storms moving in during the day and night.
Fast-moving rain hit Long Island in the morning, flooding streets, making commuting difficult and even canceling school in some areas.
Michelle O'Malley, of North Lindenhurst, says the rain came down so fast and the flood water ran so deep, it took her by surprise.
"In North Lindenhurst, I've never seen anything like it at all. It was coming down the streets like lakes, streams coming down," says O'Malley.
More than five inches of rain fell between midnight and noon in Massapequa, flooding part of Sunrise Highway.
Town of Oyster Bay pump trucks spent hours trying to get rid of the mess.
"We had a lot of storms with the hurricane, but nothing like this from a rainstorm," says Denis Monette, of Massapequa. "The streets this morning when I left to go to the university had four feet of water completely across, as you can see from the debris field here."
In Seaford, some people were able to kayak all the way around the neighborhood.
