Firefighters from across the South Shore converged on Island Park on Sunday, not to knock down flames, but to knock back clams.
Clams on the half shell were slurped down by the dozen as part of the third annual Long Island Clam Eating Contest at Peter's Clam Bar. The event raises money for local fire houses that were damaged during Superstorm Sandy.
The owner of the clam bar says nearly $10,000 was handed out last year.
This year, world champion eater Cookie Jarvis was on hand to coach the firefighters. Jarvis has 38 titles and lots of different dishes under his belt.
"French fries, pizza, chicken wings, ham and potatoes, corned beef and cabbage -- you name it, I've eaten it," he says.
The firefighters competed in their own competition, and then another event was open to the public.
