Family and friends of Shannan Gilbert returned today to the spot in Oak Beach where her remains were discovered, vowing to continue to fight until whoever is responsible for her death is brought to justice.

Police say Gilbert, of Jersey City, N.J., worked as an escort and went missing in May 2010 after reportedly fleeing the home of a client.

The search for the woman prompted the discovery of 10 sets of human remains near Gilgo Beach. Five of the victims were later identified as sex workers.

Gilbert's remains were found nearly 16 months ago in the thick swampland of Oak Beach. Former Suffolk Police Commissioner Richard Dormer said he believes her death was accidental - a theory her mother, Mari, and sister adamantly reject.

Today, however, Mari Gilbert expressed renewed faith in the police department, which now has a new homicide squad chief, Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick has vowed to take a fresh look at Gilbert's case.
