Severe weather rolled through Long Island's East End Wednesday, leaving behind some flooded streets and damage in its wake.
Southold fire officials say a lightning strike sparked a massive house fire on Wells Road in Peconic. Firefighters responded within minutes, but were too late to save the home. Officials say the house was under construction and no one was inside.
Residents estimate 5 inches of rain fell in just a half-hour. The storm also flooded streets in Southold and tore branches off trees and littered streets with debris in Cutchogue.
There were also reports of a weak tornado touching down on the North Fork.
Considering the intensity of the storm, residents say the damage was not as bad as it could have been. They add that the storm lasted less than five minutes.
