Some essential workers say they are being harassed and even attacked at work during the pandemic.
State Sen. Jim Gaughran proposed a bill allowing prosecutors to increase charges for crimes against essential workers.
The Syosset lawmaker says current laws protect first responders like police and some transit workers, but not others like grocery store employees.
"We know people are tense, these are difficult times, but we really need to protect these people because the essential workers are out there making sure that our society is functioning as best as it can under these circumstances," says Gaughran.
Increased penalties would only be in effect when there is a state of emergency.
