There is a renewed push to protect the way first responders communicate.
As News 12 has reported, the FCC wants to auction off what's called the T-Band spectrum by 2021.
It's a police and fire radio network used in 11 metro areas nationwide, including on Long Island.
Sen. Charles Schumer is sponsoring bipartisan legislation that would keep the network in place.
"We've got to not get rid of the T-Band until a new system is ready. And in fact, if our local folks want to keep the T-Band because it’s working well, they shouldn't have to pay to upgrade it either," said Schumer.
