Following the latest drug store shooting on Long Island that resulted in the death of a federal agent, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) today proposed establishing a national database to help local police keep track of all prescription drug-related crimes.In an effort to get the upper hand on the growing trend of pharmacy robberies, Schumer has also called for making drug-store related crimes punishable by up to 20 years behind bars and demanding that the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) share information on prescription drug crimes with local law enforcement. Schumer also wants national security protocols to be established for all pharmacies, such as installing bulletproof glass and keeping prescription drugs in a safe. The senator noted that local mom-and-pop pharmacies are more at risk than the big chain-store pharmacies because they cannot afford to hire a security guard. Schumer says nationally, the amount of prescription drugs stolen in armed robberies has doubled since 2007. In Nassau County alone, six pharmacies have been robbed since Aug. 17, 2011.
