Jews on Long Island celebrated Rosh Hashanah Saturday and taking into account current events, the high holy days took on a special meaning this year and security was tight.
Some families going to the North Shore Synagogue in Syosset for services say they were concerned about violence. That concern was not lost on law enforcement. Nassau County Police Commissioner James Lawrence met with leaders of the Jewish community prior to the high holy days. Lawrence says they have cause to be cautious in light of the events of 9/11 and around the world.
Rosh Hashanah is about new beginnings, a contemplative time to go within and plan positive changes as one looks toward the future. Many observing the holiday hoped it will be a future filled with peace.
