A somber ceremony took place in Point Lookout Sunday to mark the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
Some say that the seaside memorial service was a more personal way to reflect and remember the day in unity.
Long Island was home to about 500 of the more than 2,750 victims.
The event included the placing of American flags and carnations in a reflecting pool at the memorial.
More than 500 people attended the ceremony, during which families were able to write the names of victims on a 35-foot-long skyline mural.
The Town of Hempstead recently unveiled plans for a permanent Sept. 11 memorial, which will include an 18-foot-tall replica of the World Trade Center.
