On Thursday, May 8, Tyler White was taking a test at Cordello Avenue Elementary School in Central Islip.
The fifth-grader told News 12 he went to drink some water from his water bottle, not realizing the cap was still on, and when he squeezed the bottle the cap became lodged in his throat.
He began to choke.
His teacher ran out into the hallway for help, and School Safety Officer Jason Schafer ran in.
Schafer told News 12 he tried hitting Tyler on the back to no avail. Then he gave him the Heimlich maneuver and the bottle cap came up.
“Thank you for saving my life,” Tyler told Schafer, as they recounted the terrifying moments to News 12.
Tyler told News 12 that he wants to learn CPR and the Heimlich so that he can “learn to save people’s life just like Mr. Jason did.”
