School officials are urging parents to speak to their kids about social media as two school districts struggle with a sexting scandal.
Parents turned out at last night's Smithtown School Board meeting to talk about the scandal, which involves two 14-year-old Smithtown boys accused of texting images of a young girl in a sexual encounter.
A total of 20 Kings Park teens have been suspended for sharing and viewing those images.
Tenth-grader AJ Fenton defied his suspension and went to school yesterday, only to be escorted out by police.
"Say I sent you a text...can't stop someone from sending a text to me. I just looked at the video. I didn't sent it to anyone," he said.
Kings Park Superintendent Timothy Eagen said the students were suspended for failing to alert an adult.
He is urging parents to talk to their kids about about "problematic behavior" on the Internet.
