Schechter School of Long Island students and faculty at Williston Park held a memorial ceremony for Omer Neutra Friday morning.
Students and teachers sang and shared prayers during the memorial. The school is retiring his sports number: 24.
Neutra's family and friends came to the special ceremony.
“It's like coming in and being with family today," said Omer's mom, Orna Neutra.
Omer Neutra attended Schechter School of Long Island since first grade and graduated in 2019.
“He loved the school, he loved his teammates, and it's just heartwarming that we're all getting together years later here in school,” said Omer's dad, Ronen Neutra.
Omer played many sports at SSLI, including basketball, volleyball, and soccer.
“It's a moment of enshrining his memory here and keeping it alive for now, because he's still captain, and we still need to get him home,” said Omer's brother, Daniel Neutra.
During the memorial, Neutra's friends shared their favorite memories of him.
“He was goofy, a natural leader - if we were in a group of friends and we didn't know what to do, we all looked up to him immediately,” said Josh Robins, Omer's best friend.
“Even though he graduated a while ago, six years ago, everyone here still remembers him and still carries on his legacy,” said Daniel Neutra.
