Islip town officials and volunteer firefighters came together Saturday to honor the legacy of a fallen firefighter from Sayville.
The corner of Alma and Joseph streets was renamed Lawrence Sesso Way in honor of the Sayville fire chief who died in the line of duty.
Sesso suffered a heart attack after battling a blaze over the summer at an assisted living complex.
The 40-year-old father of three was also a Port Authority police officer. Many of his friends told News 12 Long Island that they will never forget his sense of humor.
"He could make you laugh one second and put you in your place the next second," said former Sayville Fire Chief Mark Beekman. "When he walked in a room, everybody knew he was there."
Sesso was a volunteer firefighter in the Sayville community for more than 23 years. The street renaming took place on the block Sesso grew up and where his family now lives.
