An environmental group is calling on the government to conserve Plum Island.

Save the Sound says the animal research facility is vital to the Long Island Sound and the area's wildlife. The group is urging the government to protect the undeveloped parts of the island, including habitats and wildlife.

Environmentalists are concerned the island could be sold for development.

As News 12 previously reported, the animal research facility is slated to be shuttered in 2020.
