Rowing into history: Seniors set world records on Long Island
Some Long Island seniors set some new indoor rowing world records Saturday in various categories.
It was the culmination of months of training at Atria Senior Living in East Northport.
Ginny Hartt became the fastest 87-year-old rower in the world during a three-minute interval. The excited senior athlete called the event “tiring.”
Marie Drago set a world record by rowing nonstop for one hour at the age of 91. She said the seniors involved were getting “healthier, stronger and better.”
The senior living facility teamed up with the non-profit U.S. Veterans Rowing and Kayaking to introduce the program to seniors to help them stay more active.
Trainor Paul Stephen Varszegi says rowing is good exercise for seniors and helps them with balance and coordination.
