Lifeguards responded to at least six emergencies in the ocean due to rough surf in Long Beach Sunday, officials say.
This was despite an order from Gov. Andrew Cuomo that closed the state's ocean beaches for Hermine, the post-tropical storm lingering offshore.
Officials say several people were pulled to safety. They say swimmers should stay out of the water until at least Wednesday.
Surfers are still allowed in the water, and they are attracted by the large waves that accompany such a storm. But it's still dangerous.
"Between the waves, current, wind -- it was a battle I couldn't win," says surfer Peter Scalisi. "It was pretty tough."
Earlier Sunday, a woman was standing on the rocks photographing the waves when a wave knocked her over. Lifeguards safely retrieved her, but it served as a reminder of the power of Mother Nature.
