The Roslyn Viaduct was shut down for the weekend due to construction, causing traffic delays in the surrounding area as people hit the road to enjoy the summer-like weather.
"There's definitely a lot more traffic on the road today, and it's much louder," says Pam Danbusky, of Roslyn.
The Department of Transportation work crews are replacing the rusting, 50-year-old steel girder viaduct with a concrete bridge. The new bridge will have four traffic lanes, full shoulders and a sidewalk. The viaduct was initially supposed to be replaced in 2008. The new target date is 2010.
According to the DOT, about 40,000 vehicles cross the bridge every day. During the weekend's construction, all the traffic was being re-routed onto side streets. The Roslyn Viaduct will reopen at 5 a.m. Monday.
