A reputed member of the Bloods gang was sentenced Wednesday to two life sentences plus 75 years in prison for murdering a 14-year-old.
Laval Farmer was convicted of shooting and killing Jose White (pictured), of Roosevelt, on West Fulton in 2001. Prosecutors said Farmer mistakenly believed White was a member of a rival gang because he was wearing blue. Farmer wanted to raise his standing in his own gang through violence, prosecutors said.
Farmer didn't acknowledge shooting White in an approximately 30-minute statement before sentencing, but he did admit to making mistakes.
"I'm disgusted with my actions," he said to White's family. "My heart goes out to you and your family. I don't know if you believe me or not."
Farmer then claimed the federal court didn't have jurisdiction in the case and turned his back on the judge.
Rhonda White, the victim's aunt, said the sentence is justified, but it won't bring her nephew back.
"I think if he wasn't caught, there would be other families that are in our same position now. Or maybe he would have ended up on the receiving end of a bullet," she said.
Farmer said he plans to appeal.
