A father in Ronkonkoma is criticizing Child Protective Services (CPS) for failure to protect his son despite numerous complaints he filed about his ex-wife.

The man says his 11-year-old son, who lives in Lindenhurst, tried to wake up his mother for a ride to school on February 10. He says when the mother did not wake up, his son took a bag of cocaine off her dresser and took it to school with him. His teacher called police and 43-year-old Toni LaBarbera was charged with drug possession and endangering a minor.

The father says he made numerous complaints to CPS over the years, even accusing his ex-wife of drug abuse. He says CPS never listened or bothered to investigate. CPS officials say they need credible evidence like arrest records or drug test results to step in. The father says if his ex-wife had an arrest record, he would not have had to call CPS in the first place.
