Rev. Al Sharpton joined the family of Eric Garner in Harlem to call on the U.S. Department of Justice to take over the investigation into the chokehold death of the Staten Island man.
Garner's mother, Gwen Carr, took the opportunity to speak to supporters and urge them to maintain a peaceful presence in the city.
Carr says the demonstrations will not be like the current situation in Ferguson, Missouri, as that would detract from their message.
An autopsy revealed that Garner died of a chokehold placed on him by an NYPD officer who was arresting him for allegedly selling untaxed cigarettes.
