Officials are warning residents of a new utility bill scam targeting Nassau County residents.

According to officials, scammers claiming to be electric workers with Freeport Electric have called customers. They claim that the customers have overdue bills and their power is going to be shut off immediately.

The con artists tell customers that their power will not go off if they give personal information and buy prepaid credit cards to cover the charges.

Freeport Electric says it never demands direct payment over the phone. It is warning customers to not give out their electric account numbers, Social Security numbers, credit card or banking information.

If you receive a suspicious call, officials say you should contact customer service.
