Residents in a West Islip community say the town is not helping them deal with an ongoing rat problem.

Chris Sebor, who lives on Kingsland Avenue, says rats are running rampant in their neighborhood. He says the problem started in the spring when large rodents were spotted scurrying around front lawns and backyards.

One neighbor tells News 12 Long Island that the town blamed the problem on recently flushed out sewers.
Neighbors say they are worried because rats pose a possible health hazard to pets and people.

A spokesperson for the Town of Islip says they haven't received any calls regarding rats and that any calls they would receive would be referred to the county Health Department.

Residents say they are taking matters into their own hands by setting traps on a daily basis. They say they have caught more than a dozen rats so far.
