A rescue effort to help dolphins off Sag Harbor reach the ocean is in high gear after some have died.
Marine experts from several local agencies are making noise with pipes and their boats to corral the mammals to an inlet that leads to deeper waters. The dolphins have been stranded in a shallow creek for nearly a week. Experts say the dolphins are disoriented and there is no available food source, which the mammals likely followed into the creek and ate.
An attempt to rescue the dolphins failed Sunday when they moved farther away from the inlet. However, efforts paid off Tuesday when several dolphins moved closer to the inlet.
