An animal rescue group is trying to show people how to help wildlife that is being harmed by litter on Long Island.
Frankie Floridia, from Strong Island Animal Rescue, is trying to help what he calls "recyclable rescues." He says a lot of trash is ending up struck on animals' faces or legs, and putting them in life-threatening situations.
Floridia brought along some items that he removed from animals. They included a peanut butter jar that was stuck on a raccoon's face and a pretzel jar that was stuck on a deer's face.
"(The deer) had that on her face for five days, no food or water," says Floridia. "Vision was impaired ... it was a danger to everything around it. If it ran into the street, got hit by a car it could cause injury to people plus itself."
There are several ways people can help, according to Floridia. He says to bungee cord garbage pails shut, clean jars out and put lids on discarded jars, and to put garbage out as late as possible.
If an animal is found struggling, you are asked to call an animal rescue group or police.
