Republican incumbents easily won re-election in Suffolk County Tuesday, but one Democrat made history in the town of Islip.
For the first time in 40 years, a Democrat has become the Islip Town supervisor. Supervisor Elect Phil Nolan says he is not worried about being the only Democrat among five board members. Republicans held out all four of their state Senate seats, including John Flanagan?s and Ceasar Trunzo?s. Suffolk Democrats held out their two congressional seats for Tim Bishop and Steve Israel.
Meanwhile, Nolan?s victory celebration won?t last long. He will be up for re-election next year. In this year?s election, he won the right to fill the last remaining year of the terms of Pete McGowan. McGowan resigned as Islip Town supervisor earlier this year.
