Report: Nassau owes millions in tax refunds
Nassau County could have a big bill to pay after a ruling by the state's highest court.
Utility companies, including Verizon and National Grid, sued Nassau County more than a decade ago, claiming they were being charged illegal garbage district taxes. The county appealed the case and lost, and now faces a bill of almost $300 million.
County Executive Ed Mangano's office did not respond to News 12 Long Island's request for comment. The legislature's presiding officer told News 12, "We will continue to clean up this mess as we work toward a resolution that is in the best interests of the taxpayers." NIFA chairman Jon Kaiman says the county needs to have a "multifaceted approach" to obtain the money needed.
A spokesperson for National Grid says it is in discussion with Nassau County to determine exactly how much money is due.
