Ten police officers from New York City and Long Island were honored for their heroism with an award from Rep. Tom Suozzi.
"We are very grateful to our law enforcement officers for everything they do to protect us," Suozzi said.
Nassau County police officer Kristin Motschwiller was honored for busting a burglary ring in the 6th Precinct.
"Every day brings something different - that's the beauty of the job - you get to meet people along the way, help people and get the bad people off the street," Motschwiller said.
Suffolk County officers Billy Judge and Sean Obenhein responded to a shooting. They approached a man who was hiding behind a car with a handgun within reach.
There was a struggle. The officers were injured but managed to eventually arrest the suspected shooter.
"Every day, Suffolk County police officers go out and give it their best and run towards things most people run away from," Obenhein said.
Each officer received an American flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol.
