A local lawmaker raised concerns Tuesday about the height of MacArthur Airport?s air traffic control tower. Representative Steve Israel (D-Huntington) says the tower needs to be raised by at least 50 feet. Currently, visibility is impeded from the terminal to the tarmac. Air traffic controllers say a taxiway collision is a real possibility because of two blind spots. Israel says officials from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are aware of the problem. He is calling on the FAA to expedite construction of a safer tower. Meantime, FAA officials say a new tower will be built by 2010. Israel, however, says that is not soon enough.
