The Red Cross transported supplies Thursday to a Massapequa Park school gym that would serve as an emergency shelter during a natural disaster.
With hurricane season approaching, the Red Cross is putting 30 storage containers in evacuation centers across Long Island as a precaution. The container in Massapequa Park holds 2,000 blankets and 1,000 cots. Both the container and the gym still have plenty of room for food and water.
"We're all like a little self-contained village here," Red Cross volunteer Bruce Vesloski said. "We'll have everything here we need for three days, before the rest of the help comes."
Vesloski, who has volunteered in New Orleans and other disaster areas, hopes Long Islanders won't end up needing the containers.
"We're hoping we'll never have to use it, but we're being prepared," he said.
