Nassau County Red Cross officials are asking for volunteers to work in hurricane shelters should a powerful storm hit Long Island.
Officials say they need 2,000 workers to open 83 shelters in the event of an emergency. Currently, they say there is staffing to operate only 16 shelters that could house 21,000 people.
Volunteers say the number one goal is that individual families formulate their own evacuation plan in case of a hurricane, and that shelters be used as a last resort. Related Information: Nassau County Red Cross Suffolk County Red Cross
