Record April cold grips Long Island
After a mild winter - one with single digit snowfall - winter seems like it wants to join the party a little late in 2020.
Much of the tri-state area was under a freeze warning Friday morning, with temperatures dropping below freezing. Long Island's main station for weather keeping over at MacArthur Airport notched a record, entering a now three-way tie with 2005 and 1971. On average, we typically don't see numbers fall below 41 degrees this time of year.
The latest date in the season that overnight temperatures dropped to or below freezing occurred in 2008, when the mercury fell to 32 degrees on the morning of May 1.
As for this year, the cold may still not be completely over. The unseasonable chill will hang on a few more days, with snow in the forecast for part of the area for a third time this week! While Long Island will only see a cold rain Friday night into Saturday morning, areas well to the north look to pick up some minor accumulations.
Speaking of snow, curious as to the latest Long Island has ever seen measurable snowfall?  That would be April 20, 1983 with 0.1" recorded, though there have been trace amounts picked up in May and even June!
As for the rest of April, we can expect to get back on track with seasonable temperatures beginning next week.
