Should the smoking age in Suffolk be raised to 25?
That will be the discussion at a public hearing this week.
Legislator Sam Gonzalez, of Brentwood, has introduced a bill that would raise the smoking and vaping age in Suffolk from 21 to 25.
The county Legislature is expected to discuss it during a meeting on Tuesday.
Legislator Gonzalez says the bill would save lives, but some residents News 12 spoke to say they aren't sure.
Last year, New York passed "Tobacco 21" into law, making 21 the legal age to smoke statewide.
Localities have the option to raise it higher.
