Nassau and Suffolk county officials say they will suspend sales tax on gas starting in June.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman signed a bill Wednesday that will extend through the end of the year.
It matches what New York State will be doing.
Under the bill, Nassau County's 5-cent a gallon tax will be applied on the first $3 of gas, but not to the remainder of the sale.
"We're capping it at $3 and by doing so, any cost of the gas per gallon over $3 will take no tax," Blakeman says. "We're giving that back to the people so that they can afford to buy gas."
Suffolk County will be applying the same rules.
Gas prices continue to push downward across New York, according to AAA.
The average price in New York state is $4.20 per gallon, which is higher than the national average at $4.08.
The average price here on Long Island matches the national average at $4.08, which is down 10 cents from a week ago.
