PSEGLI: Restorations completed for customers who lost power during Isaias
PSEGLI says all 420,000 customers who lost power during the time Isaias hit Long Island have been restored as of 10 p.m. Wednesday night.
About 9,000 outages remained earlier in the day, but now those numbers are down to about 400, all of which lost power in the days following Isaias, not during the storm. PSEGLI also says some customers lost power as a result of severe weather on Wednesday.
PSEGLI had set a Wednesday deadline for all restorations, and says the small remainder of cases will be handled overnight Wednesday.
The utility had originally set a deadline for most of the restorations last weekend, but then backtracked after saying some of the jobs were more difficult than anticipated.
The restoration process has been one that came with plenty of anger from Long Island residents and politicians. Customers decried PSEGLI's text and phone systems and say it was extremely difficult to communicate with them at times.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo is among those seeking an investigation into PSEGLI. Nassau Executive Laura Curran says she wants customers to be reimbursed for spoiled food and medication. PSEGLI says they are looking into reimbursements.
News 12 has spoken to many people in medically vulnerable positions over the past week who went days without power. In response, state Sen. Jim Gaughran is calling for an overhaul of the utility's Critical Care Program by giving oversight to the Public Service Commission.
"You need a communication system for a utility ... these are life and death issues," says Gaughran.
The utility says it has had more than 6,500 workers on 16-hour shifts to restore power, including some coming from out of state to help.
