Power restoration efforts continued over the weekend and into Monday in the wake of the nor'easter that buffeted Long Island Friday with ferocious winds and heavy rainfall.
The storm cut power to more than 100,000 Long Islanders. PSEG Long Island officials say power was restored to 90 percent of customers by Saturday night, but there were areas of "scattered" damage that took longer to address.
Hundreds were still without power by Monday morning, but that number had dwindled by the afternoon, and PSEG said it aimed to have all power restored Monday night.
"Three days is a long time," says John O'Connell, of PSEG Long Island. "We appreciate their patience. We're not perfect, but we want to do better. We will learn from the storm."
The Noll family in Oceanside was among those grateful to see their power return on Monday. Michael Noll is a diabetic who needs his insulin refrigerated. His nephew has asthma that requires a plugged-in nebulizer, and his mother-in-law is elderly.
The family had to rely on a neighbor and an extension cord that ran across the street to keep their heat on.
"We're monitoring the weather, completing repairs to the system, restocking material, re-tooling our trucks and getting people ready to go in case it happens again," says O'Connell.
