Opening statements were given Thursday in the murder trial of Tyler Flach.
The 21-year-old Lido Beach man is accused of fatally stabbing Oceanside High School student Khaseen Morris during an after-school brawl in 2019.
Prosecutors said in their opening statement that Flach is guilty of second-degree murder because he intentionally killed Morris when he stabbed him three times during a fight in the parking lot of an Oceanside strip mall.
Police say the fight was over a girl, Stefany Bedoya, who became friends with Morris just days before he was killed.
Bedoya testified that her ex-boyfriend, a friend of Flach's, was angry about the friendship and wanted to fight the 16-year-old.
Flach's defense attorney Ed Sapone says while his client went to the fight with a knife in hand, the stabbing was reckless, but not intentional.
"During bunches of punches with a knife in hand, very sadly one had pierced the heart," Sapone says. "It is not an intentional murder case."
The victim's sisters say have been waiting three years to see Flach stand trial for killing their brother.
"He's missed so much," says Keyanna Morris. "We had babies a month apart last year. He never got to meet his last nephew or his niece."
She says they are going to keep on staying strong to get justice for their brother.
Flach faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted of second-degree murder.
