A woman accused of driving drunk and killing a grandmother did not have a driver's license, the prosecution said at her arraignment in Mineola Monday.
According to prosecutors, 20-year-old Sophia Santos, of Albertson, was driving with a learner's permit when she crashed into another car at the corner of Hempstead Turnpike and Wantagh Avenue in Levittown around 2:30 a.m. Sunday. A portable Breathalyzer found Santos, the daughter of 2003 Kentucky Derby-winning jockey Jose Santos, had a blood alcohol content of .18 after the accident, prosecutors said.
Defense attorney Felice Muraca was livid outside the courtroom, saying the only admissible blood-alcohol reading is from a blood test. He said those results were not yet available.
The victim, Virginia Casazza Urgo, 62, of Valley Stream, had just celebrated her birthday at a lounge in Plainview. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Urgo's sister, Linda Chapman, and husband, John Urgo, were brought to Nassau University Medical Center in critical condition. John Urgo's condition has since been upgraded to stable. The driver of the car Urgo was in, Nancy Tumminello, and another passenger, William Clarkin, were both treated and released for their injuries.
The victim's son, Thomas Urgo, and about two dozen other relatives attended the arraignment.
"If we could just help one person from not drinking and driving, how grateful we would be and some good would come out of this," Thomas Urgo said.
