Two public meetings were held Wednesday in Nassau County regarding a proposed water rate hike.
Some New York American Water customers say the 8.3 percent rate hike would be unfair. They are calling for a public water district to be created to replace New York American Water, saying it would lower costs and improve quality.
New York American Water says the rate hike is necessary to pay for infrastructure improvements. CEO Brian Bruce says the company needs $150 million to maintain its high standards.
A nighttime meeting was held at Wantagh High School's auditorium. In addition to complaining of the hike, residents there say the quality of the water is not very good. They say New York American's water was brown for years.
An earlier meeting was held at Malverne Village Hall.
