Renewed effort to ease tourist traffic on the North Fork could mean even more limited parking on the East End.
A proposed parking ban would prohibit parking on both sides of Sound Avenue from Route 25A in the Town of Riverhead to the Southold Town line. The scenic, two-lane roadway stretches about 14 miles.
The Town of Riverhead says it is proposing the ban because of safety reasons.
Visitors exploring local farms often park on the sides of this road during peak tourist season. Locals also say the practice is becoming a safety issue. Farmers, meanwhile, say they are worried the parking ban will hurt area businesses.
A public hearing is scheduled for next Tuesday at Riverhead Town Hall.
