A possible strike of Long Island Rail Road workers could be delayed until September.
The unions say they are willing to delay a strike until after Labor Day. The move would avoid hurting the summer tourist season and would give the two sides more time to reach an agreement.
UTU Union General Chairman Anthony Simon proposed the 60-day delay earlier this week, but says he is still waiting for a formal answer from the MTA.
The plan would delay the possible walkout from July 19 until Sept. 17.
The unions and MTA remain far apart in contract talks. LIRR workers want a 17 percent wage hike over six years. The MTA had offered an 11 percent increase.
