A potential bus strike in the Middle Country School District has parents worrying about possible transportation disruptions this week.

Timothy Lynch, the president of the union that represents bus company workers, says they have been trying for months to come to an agreement with the Baumann and Sons bus company, which includes ACME buses. The company also provides buses for Commack and Northport school districts, BOCES programs and special-needs students across Long Island.

"The last thing we want to do is see a strike, but we are not going to allow an employer to keep people living with poverty wages, medical benefits that he's trying to take away from them," he says.

Lynch says it's not just about money, it's also about safety. He says there isn't enough parking for workers, so some who work out of one bus lot have to instead park across Veterans Highway.

In a statement, the company said in part, "We are currently working with the federal mediator, and are hopeful that a resolution can be achieved."

The two sides are scheduled to meet Wednesday. The earliest a strike could start would be Thursday.
