The village board in Port Washington North voted unanimously Monday to repeal a Halloween curfew that had been in place for two decades.
The 22-year-old law prohibited individuals under the age of 19 to be out of the house after 7 p.m. without supervision. Mayor Robert Weitzner said the curfew was instituted after teenagers destroyed a great deal of property. One resident recalled that there were several fights, including one in which a police officer was injured.
However, Weitzner said the constitutional question of restricting the rights of 18-year-olds was a gray area.
Despite Monday's vote, the curfew law will remain in place through this year's Halloween. The repeal will take effect November 1.
