A Port Washington family has been reunited after a long adoption procedure.
For the past four years, the Lacal family has tried to settle adoption procedures with Ukrainian authorities over their son Vadim. They say paperwork problems got in the way and held up the procedure.
Vadim's father Bill says the mix-up caused extensive court time in Ukraine. The family then got Rep. Steve Israel involved in the proceedings.
"We wanted some common sense and compassion," said Rep. Israel. "We stayed on this every day and it had a good result."
Vadim has since been living with his new family.
"This family changed my life. I am happy because I have a family," Vadim told News 12.
The family plans to spend Christmas in Florida. Vadim will attend high school on Long Island in January.
