Two candidates in Long Island's congressional races seem to be on solid footing, according to a newly released Newsday/Sienna College poll.
The poll has Democrat Tom Suozzi leading Republican state Sen. Jack Martins 50 percent to 34 percent in the race for New York's 3rd District. The winner will fill the seat of retiring Rep. Steve Israel.
Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg says one of the big reasons for Suozzi's lead is that many voters are still not familiar with Martins. Suozzi is the former Nassau County executive.
"Less than five weeks from Election Day, the fact that Jack Martins is still unknown to 59 percent of the district has to be of concern to the Martins campaign," he says.
On the East End, incumbent Rep. Lee Zeldin is enjoying a 15-point lead over Democrat Anna Throne-Holst, the former Southampton Town supervisor. Fifty-three percent of those interviewed said they planned to vote for Zeldin, while 38 percent backed Throne-Holst.
The Throne-Holst campaign believes it can make up ground by tying Zeldin to Trump, whose poll numbers are slipping.
Election Day is Nov. 8.
