A new poll conducted by TD Ameritrade has found that customers may not be pumped to return to gyms once they reopen.
The poll states that 59% of the 2,000 people questioned do not plan to renew their gym memberships.
Charlie Cassara, who owns SC Fitness in Farmingdale and Hicksville, says he's not surprised by the results.
"Personally it's frustrating to me," says Cassara. "We're doing the best we can to keep our members engaged and be outside."
News 12 asked viewers what they planned to do and some tweeted they would not return.
Viewer Elvy Landa tweeted, "Yeah let me go inside a place where everyone's sweating and that sweat is all over the place. No thanks."
Another viewer tweeted how now that people realized they can exercise outside for free, why pay for a gym membership?
"Working out outside isn't the same intensity of what you get in here," says Cassara.
As News 12 has reported, Cassara is the one who spearheaded a class-action suit against Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the attorney general and the state. Gyms in New York have been shut down since March at the direction of the governor, and there's been no talk of when they'll be allowed to reopen. He says the suit now has 600 plaintiffs.
"Businesses are closing up," says Cassara. "They're going bankrupt."
Cassara says it's all very frustrating. He says that he believes the majority of his clients do want to return to the gym.
