The new location for Nassau County?s 1st Precinct police station is sparking fierce debate within the Baldwin community.
The new precinct building is on Grand Avenue in front of Baldwin Senior High School. Some parents say they?re worried about a police station with a lockup being so close to a school if a prisoner escapes.
Legislative candidate Christian Browne agrees and doubts whether a leased police building is the best deal for taxpayers, saying it takes away tax revenue and commercial space. However, Leg. Joseph Scannell (D-Baldwin) says it?s less expensive than building a new one.
The move requires approval of the county Legislature. Officials say the transfer could begin as early as spring 2010.
