Members of a Mastic Beach family awoke early Thursday morning to bullets tearing through their house, police say.
Three adults and four children were asleep around 4:50 a.m. on Grassmere Drive when shots ripped through their walls, according to investigators.
"I thought someone threw a rock at the window," says Jaimelyn Heming, who was among those inside. "I woke up to something crashing."
Police say four bullets hit the house. One in the foundation, one in the wall of the master bedroom, another through a window frame and the fourth into the bedroom of Heming's 13-year-old son.
That last shot blasted a hole through the wall just inches above the sleeping teen's pillow.
Two other bullets flew through the outer wall, then a closet and into the bedroom of Heming's two daughters, ages 2 and 3.
"By the grace of God we're good," Heming says.
Police say no one was injured in the shooting. They are reviewing surveillance cameras in the area as part of the investigation.
They ask anyone with information to call Suffolk's Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
