Police and animal rescue crews descended on an East Northport home Tuesday after receiving reports of a possible puppy mill in the residence.
According to police, the home on Wicks Road and South Haven Drive was filled with dozens of dogs. Investigators say they found the purebred dogs living in deplorable conditions in the basement of the home. Crews spent Tuesday afternoon removing 49 adult dogs and seven puppies one by one. They also removed a parrot and two squirrels.
Irene Monroig, 66, was breeding purebred dogs for profit, police say. Authorities say the situation was brought to their attention after a neighbor called the SPCA and complained about the smell emanating from the home.
Some neighbors say they?re not surprised by the allegations against Monroig, while others maintained she was never cruel to animals. The dogs were taken to a veterinarian for evaluation. Monroig faces numerous charges, including animal cruelty.
